Counter demonstration in support of immigrants in Newtown

The counter demonstration in Newtown was organised by Undod Canolbarth Cymru and was a response to the Anti immigrant, Newtown Action Group’s march. The counter demonstration heard strong speaches from Labour MP Steve Witherdean, Plaid MP Liz Saville Roberts and Plaid councillor Elwyn Vaughan among others. The Anti immigrant march was, perhaps better attended, but not by much. The only violence occurred when one of the anti immigrant marches attacked a police officer! In many ways the Anti fascists had scored a victory in the run up to the demonstration by causing the Anti immigrants to become more and more reasonable in their public utterances. Nevertheless, there is an urgent need to increase the level and breadth of the arguments in working class communities to counter act the scapegoating that the main parties and the media are pushing, and in doing so obscure the real culprits in society.
