The Welsh Communist Party welcomes the unity shown by the four Welsh peace and solidarity organisations: Stop the War Cymru; Cymdeithas y Cymod; CND Cymru and Cymru Cuba in coming together to send a strong message to our Welsh political leaders, to condemn the forced removal and attack on Venezuela for the aggression that it is and to call for an immediate cessation of military action by the US, and the return of Maduro to his country.
The Communist Party also echoes the call for further protests against this barbaric act in communities across Wales.

Venezuela: Stand against US bombing and regime change
The USA’s unprovoked attack on Venezuela and its kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, to face trumped-up drug-trafficking charges in New York, are an outrage against international law and the sovereignty of nation states.
They confirm that the undisguised seizure of other countries’ resources is to be the new normal for the outlaw regime in Washington — and, in line with its National Security Strategy published in November, that it will act to break every government in Latin America that pursues an independent foreign or domestic policy.
Trump’s bombing attack on Venezuela must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. The forced kidnapping of President Maduro is a war crime. It follows weeks where the US has targeted boats allegedly involved in drug trafficking, has moved a considerable fleet to the Caribbean threatening Venezuela, and has demanded regime change in a country which has long faced sanctions and repressive measures from Washington.
The recent US national security strategy spelt out that Trump is resurrecting the Monroe doctrine and that US imperialism regards intervention in its ‘backyard’ of Latin America as its right. In its sights are not just Venezuela but Cuba as well. The Venezuelan government has urged the people of Venezuela to resist these attacks. Its official statement says the action is in breach of the UN charter, and is about targeting the country’s resources, especially its oil reserves.
While such illegal military actions are not new, we have reached a watershed moment as the façade of “humanitarian intervention” in the name of “freedom and democracy” has been dispensed with. Trump openly admits that this attack is an attempt to gain access to Venezuelan oil, marking a return to the naked aggression of 19th century gunboat diplomacy.
The Welsh Government and all Members of the Senedd should condemn the forced removal and attack for the aggression that it is and call for an immediate cessation of military action by the US, and the return of Maduro to his country.
Silence is complicity with this barbaric act of aggression.
The slavish response from Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, merely served to underline the British state’s role as a vassal of the USA.
This is not of course the only recent military action by the Trump regime which has bombed Syria and Nigeria in recent weeks and has given full support to Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Despite his election promises of ending ‘forever wars’ Trump is embroiled in stoking imperialist conflicts around the world. It is time for the British government to break from US foreign policy and call for peace, not war.
Stop the War Cymru calls for full solidarity with the Venezuelan people and the return of their president. Only the peoples of Latin America can decide their own fate and choose their own government and should be able to do so without interference. There can be no support for US imperialism in Latin America or for the crimes of Trump.
Stop the War Cymru further calls for protests against this barbaric act in communities across Wales.
