An event will be held in Tonypandy in the Rhondda Valley on Saturday the 13th of June 2026 to commemorate the 90th anniversary of a significant episode in the town’s history – the Battle of de Winton Field.

It was on the 11th of June 1936 that the leader of the British Union of Fascists, Oswald Mosley, sent his shock troops into Tonypandy in a bid to gain a foothold in the area. The blackshirts were met by a crowd of local men and women, 6,000 strong, who forcibly drove them out of their town before breaking out into a rendition of the communist anthem ‘The Red Flag’.

This year’s commemoration will pay tribute to the bravery and resolve of those who took part in the Battle of de Winton Field and will also focus on the continuing fight against fascism in the Rhondda Valleys, in Wales and beyond. The event will be held in the Cambrian Colliery (NUM) Club in Tonypandy on Saturday afternoon the 13th of June commencing at 12:30pm. An official blue plaque will be unveiled by RCT Council.

Speakers at the event are Alex Gordon of the Communist Party, Laura Doel of TUC Cymru, Peter Harris and Alan Warren of IB Cymru, Rhondda Plaid Cymru MS Alun Cox and former MP Beth Winter. The Red Choir will sing songs of solidarity and there will be stalls, book sales and the International Brigades Exhibition on display.
